Message from the President & CEO

When you think about Baycrest you may picture one of the premier skilled nursing home facilities, the Apotex, Jewish Home for the Aged, our world class Rotman Research Institute or even one of our research-based disease management programs such as Moving on After Stroke which is provided all across Ontario. But what is most unique about Baycrest is how all of these enterprises come together to make it one of the few organizations in the world that is poised to transform aging.

Baycrest is an academic health sciences centre, fully affiliated with the University of Toronto. With our world-class “bench to community” neuroscience combined with translational science rooted in a unique continuum of care that serves as a living lab we are not just providing care, we are constantly advancing care practices through the development of new understandings of the brain and aging.

In fact, thanks to these distinctive attributes of science embedded in care, our work has already produced ground breaking scientific knowledge on how to train, and re-train the brain to help transform aging.

The uniqueness of Baycrest is recognized world-wide simply because there is no other organization with such a strong and advanced neuroscience focus on aging and the brain situated in such a large care setting.

As Dr. Barry Lebowitz, director for Research and Aging, at the University of California and former director of the Aging Branch of the National Institute of Mental Health, said after reviewing our scientific enterprise:

“With its world-class pure and applied science set in the living lab, Baycrest, more than any place in the world, is moving towards transforming aging… If they cannot do it in this world-class setting then it cannot be done.”

We know the world is watching, and waiting for Baycrest to do for brain health in the 21st century what was done for cardiovascular health in the 20th century. And that is why we are focused on expanding our knowledge of aging and the brain and putting it into practice around the world, whether it be new ways of keeping the brain fit, new diagnostic tools that are able to measure cognitive status in the home or clinical setting, or through our brain rehabilitation programs.

Baycrest has the vision to move forward to transform aging. We have the strengths to move forward -- and we believe it is our responsibility to move forward.

On behalf of everyone at Baycrest I welcome you to our website. I hope you find our site helpful in both answering your questions and demonstrating how we live our vision every day through our programs & services, our research and our devoted staff.

Yours very truly,

Bill Reichman

President and CEO
