New tests to diagnose vascular dementia
Drs. Donald Stuss and Sandra Black, scientists at the Rotman Research Institute at Baycrest, were part of an international group of neuropsychologists and neurologists that has developed the world’s first common set of tests and standards to determine if a person has vascular dementia as opposed to Alzheimer’s disease.
Vascular dementia results from mini-strokes in the brain and is difficult to diagnose. Funded by the Ministry of Health, Baycrest is working with Sunnybrook Health Sciences Centre and St. John’s Rehab Hospital to create a computerized bedside screening tool for eventual use in the clinical setting.
