About The Mindset Shift Learning Series The Mindset Shift is a transformative three-part series where you will explore the link between how our brains work and the everyday habits we form. Learn how to change old habits and build new ones to help you successfully achieve the healthy lifestyle you seek. Each session enables you to uncover the remarkable potential of the human brain and equip you with the mindset to make lasting positive changes in your life. Gain the confidence to communicate what matters to you about aging and brain health. Participants will share their experiences and learn together with the ongoing support of the facilitators. By attending all sessions and actively participating in this series, you will develop a deeper understanding of brain health and gain control over your own well-being. Whether you seek personal growth, have a desire to advocate for successful aging or crave more knowledge, The Mindset Shift series offers a unique opportunity to start a meaningful journey toward whole health wellness. About This Session Join us to explore the link between our brains, our habits and our ability to achieve better brain health. Learn about modifiable risk factors for dementia, which are the aspects of your life that you can change. We’ll also discuss the concept of neuroplasticity (i.e., how the brain changes) and the power of mindset to improve your health. Complete an overall wellness and lifestyle self-assessment and take part in an engaging and interactive discussion on lifestyle choices for better brain health. Session 2: Making Small Changes That Last About This Session Discover the link between our brains, our habits and our ability to achieve better brain health. Learn what micro-habits are, how long it takes to form a new habit and how to change your mindset to form new habits. We’ll explore the neuroscience of making up your mind (i.e., the parts of our brain that help us make decisions), learn about meditation techniques and discover the profound effects of visualization on neuroplasticity and changing the brain. Session 3: Advocating for Successful Aging About This Session During this session we’ll discuss the neuroscience of having a positive mindset (i.e., how our thoughts can change our outlook), and how it affects longevity and the experience of aging. Learn about the myths and stigma linked to aging, and why individual agency (being in the “driver’s seat”) of your aging process is so beneficial. We will also discuss how some of us can have influence in the community by advocating for healthy aging for all older adults. The Mindset Shift Facilitators Larissa McKetton, PhD Larissa McKetton is highly passionate about all things related to neuroscience and brain health. She completed her PhD and post-doctoral fellowship in clinical neuroscience and loves to educate others, as evidenced with prior extensive experience teaching in health- and science-related fields. She is currently the Director of Scientific and Clinical Development at Cogniciti Inc., conducting neuroscience research while focusing on solutions to maintain cognitive health, increase independent aging, and reduce healthcare costs and caregiver support needs. Laurie Bernick, RN MScN Central to Laurie’s career has been understanding and supporting others as they age. She is an inter-professional educator at Baycrest and volunteers on the Seniors Advisory Panel with the Centre for Aging + Brain Health Innovation, powered by Baycrest (CABHI). She has worked as a nurse practitioner at Trillium Health Partners, a clinical nurse specialist at Baycrest and has provided care for older adults in their homes, clinics, in-patient care settings and community falls prevention programs. She was an assistant lecturer at York University and an adjunct lecturer with the Faculty of Nursing at the University of Toronto. Laurie enjoys music, painting, skiing, baking and being with her family and grandchildren.
