What do occupational therapists do?

Most of the western world views the term “occupation” as being synonymous with work. As occupational therapists, we hold onto the broader meaning and define occupation as everything people do to occupy themselves including:
  • looking after themselves (self-care)
  • enjoying themselves (leisure)
  • contributing to the social and economic fabric of their communities (productivity)
  • Participating in activities that are meaningful to us is important for our health and well-being.

Occupational therapy focuses on the complex and dynamic relationships between people, their occupations and their environments.
