Arts in Health

The Arts in Health Discipline at Baycrest employs the mandate of building, developing and overseeing programs and curricula that use the arts as a vehicle to enable the voices of individuals we serve and capture their lived experiences. Activities that tap into creative potential include storytelling and expressive arts such as writing, painting, dancing, music, intergenerational projects and/or theatre. The Arts in Health program aims to enhance culture change by offering transformative opportunities that integrate the arts within healthcare to improve physical, social and emotional health. Experiences within arts-based practice enhance feelings of confidence and self-esteem, enrich relationships and strengthen therapeutic rapport for all clients across the aging spectrum with complex care needs.

The arts serve as a vehicle for self-expression and for maintaining a strong sense of identity, personhood, culture and connection to community.

Our goal is to offer professional and therapeutic arts opportunities to enable older adults to rediscover creativity, meaning and purpose, build and sustain relationships and enhance the overall quality of their lives.

Here are a few examples of programs within the Arts in Health discipline:
  • Artist-in-Residence
  • Sharing Dance Older Adults
  • Music Share for Seniors
  • Expressive Arts
